Cancel Your Hearing Aid Feedback

You’re enjoying a lovely evening out with your significant other and now you’re both just sitting down to share a box of popcorn and watch the newest movie at the theater. The lights dim. The sound gets louder. People quiet. But something doesn’t sound quite right. There’s an irritating squealing sound. It’s not from the screen, but is buzzing from your hearing aids! It’s annoying to you, but you’re also noticing that the people around you can hear it to!

In this scenario, you’re experiencing a case of acoustic feedback. Similar to when a stage microphone squeals, it’s caused when sound traveling through a microphone to speakers is continuously picked up by the microphone and re-amplified. In hearing aids, when sound sometimes leaks from the receiver back to the microphone, the microphone loops the sound which spurs a high-pitched whistle or buzz. Feedback can be caused from multiple things but most commonly is due to a the hearing aid loosening in your ear from chewing, talking, combing your hair, etc. It also can be due to a poorly fit hearing aid.
