Bedtime Care for Your Hearing Aids

Posted by Shea Hearing Aid Center on October 25, 2013

After a long day, you’re ready to fall asleep in your comfy bed. Aren’t you forgetting something? You need to take care of your hearing aids first! Whether you wear custom or standard, there are a few steps that must be done before calling it a night.

Daily nighttime cleaning is recommended since moisture, earwax, and other contaminates can accumulate throughout the day and contribute to poorly functioning hearing aids. Use a soft, dry cloth or tissue to wipe off your hearing aids. If you wear standard hearing aids, the earmolds and tubes should also be cleaned. When wax in the tube cannot be reached with a tissue, remove the earmold from the earhook and run warm water over the earmold and through the tubing. Be careful to ONLY put the earmold in the water and not the hearing aid. Thoroughly rinse and shake out excess moisture and set the earmold and tubing out to dry before reattaching both to the hearing aid.

After cleaning, you are now ready to tuck your hearing aids in for the night. Avoid wearing them overnight because they can cause discomfort and feedback from touching your pillow. Instead, remove your hearing aids and open the battery compartment door all the way right before you go to bed. Opening the door will extend your battery life and allow fresh air to enter the hearing aid and dry it more completely.

Place your hearing aids in a closed container on a dresser or some other safe and accessible location. Avoid storing your hearing aids on a bedside table or other low location where children and/or your pets can get to them. Your hearing aids are now cleaned and secured for the night. When you wake up in the morning, you simply have to pop your hearing aids in and you’re set for the day.
